Depose and Repose
MATERIALS: Cork, pushpins, notes contributed by the public.
This bust is made of cork, it is face down, turning its underside into a bulletin board. There is nothing to overthrow or depose, what it represents has already been put to rest -making room for what matters to you now.
Through monuments we attempt to control evocation. It is through them that we try to turn our present into a permanent past. From the Sumerians, Egyptians, Greeks, Romans to our United States, we keep entrusting our messages for the future in the durability of stone and metal. These attempts betray an underlying anxiety: for surely if that person, or that ideal, or that event were so crucial to the future, our descendants would not need bronze and marble to remember them by.
